Bibliotekshaven – The Royal Library Garden
–
Bibliotekshaven (English: The Royal Library Garden) is a public garden located between Christiansborg Palace and the Royal Library in the center of Copenhagen, Denmark. In the immediate vicinity, you will find the Ministry of Finance and the old stock exchange (Børsen) made by King Christian the 4th.
The garden is a little oasis that attracts many visitors year-round – both Danes and tourists. The shallow pool in the middle of the garden reveals that there once was a port at this location. Today the garden is characterized by flower beds and big shady trees.
Bibliotekshaven was designed in 1920 by landscape architect Jens Peder Andersen and castle architect Thorvald Jørgensen.
In the garden, you will find a sculpture of the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard.
The fountain was installed in 1999. This is an eight-meter-high copper column that rises from the middle of the garden pool. The fountain is very active by the hour. It was donated by the New Carlsberg Foundation to the Royal Library when the library annex, the Black Diamond was made.
You can enjoy the many flowers from the benches in the shade of the trees or in the sun along the wall of the National Archives courtyard.
In the four grassy corners, the column bases from the old Christiansborg Castle are being used as flower decorations. The principal axis of Bibliotekshaven forms a link between the National Archives courtyard and the main entrance to the Royal Library.
